BAM NUTTALL AND PARTNERS PAVE THE WAY FOR CHESHIRE WILDLIFE TRUST

BAM Nuttall is a Corporate Silver Member of Cheshire Wildlife Trust and its contract team has developed a close working relationship with the Trust since joining in 2008. So when BAM Nuttall was approached for a solution to the Trust’s rapidly deteriorating driveway it looked for ways to help. The driveway, which is approximately 250m long, forms the main access road to CWT’s headquarters at Bickley Hall Farm nr Malpas.

The driveway has a reasonably solid base but is susceptible to potholing and is wholly unsuitable for the vehicles and visitors requiring access to the farm and the headquarters. The solution was to regrade the existing driveway and prepare the surface for topping off with a layer of flexible surfacing. BAM Nuttall has an extensive and supportive supply chain working on its Cheshire Highways contract and by making a few strategic phone calls the company managed to secure willing contributions from a number of its suppliers to carry out the work required for this large-scale operation:

• Land Recovery, based at Whitemoss Quarry in Crewe, supplied the plant and equipment free of charge to carry out the excavation and preparatory work. The company carries out minor improvement schemes, provides plant and equipment and supplies aggregates to the Cheshire Highways contract.

•Kays Traffic Management, based in Blackburn provided the traffic management labour and equipment, again free of charge, to allow the surfacing works to be carried out safely. Kays provides a number of services to BAM Nuttall including traffic management, gully emptying, grass cutting and siding out works.

•Hanson Contracting is a major UK surfacing contractor and one of the key supply chain partners on the Cheshire Highways contract. Hanson carried out the surfacing works on the driveway, providing all labour, plant and equipment free.

•BAM Nuttall, as well as being the catalyst to bring all the various companies together, provided the labour to carry out the preparatory work to the drive and to install the traffic management. It also provided the staff to supervise and co-ordinate these resources and liaise with the supply chain and the Trust’s staff to keep disruption to their day-to-day operations to a minimum.

The Trust welcomes organisations such as BAM Nuttall and large numbers of school children to its headquarters where they spend the day exploring the farm, pond dipping and enjoying the wonderful Cheshire countryside as well as providing volunteer labour for conservation tasks and projects. The Trust was keen to get the driveway sorted out in time for this year’s One Earth Festival which was held at Bickley Hall Farm in July. The festival was open to the public and included activities such as guided walks, pond dipping, mini-beast hunting, art activities, live music and much more. BAM Nuttall was able – with a bit of shuffling of resources and programme juggling – to react quickly to the Trust’s request and completed the work the week before the festival.

Allan Stubbs, Corporate Affairs Officer for CWT, thanked BAM Nuttall and its suppliers for carrying out the work and commented: “The driveway had become a serious problem, particularly in the winter, and because of BAM Nuttall’s efforts and those of its suppliers the problem has been solved. Without this generous contribution, we would eventually have had to spend funds on the drive rather than using them for the conservation of the countryside which is our main aim”.

Steve Addison, BAM Nuttall’s Project Manager said: “It was only by pooling resources from our supply chain that we were able to get the work done in time. I would like to thank them all for responding so positively to the Trust’s cry for help and for generously volunteering their resources”.
