Black Moss Covert
Semi-natural broadleaved woodland.
Location
Blackmoss Covert is situated on Carrington Moss 2 kilometres west of Altrincham town centre and 3 Kilometres south-east of the Shell U.K Chemical plant. (O.S. Grid Ref.: SJ745889).
Access
From Black Moss Road a public footpath leads to Black Moss Covert. Cars can be parked on Black Moss Road close to the Cinderland Crossing.
Access to the reserve is by permit from Cheshire Wildlife Trust only.
Status
The reserve is owned by the national trust and leased to Cheshire Wildlife Trust. It covers 4.9 acres (2.1ha). The whole reserve is a Site of Biological Importance (SBI) grade B.
The majority of the site is semi-natural broadleaved woodland on remnant peat mossland. There is a mixture of sessile (Quercus petraea) and pendunculate oak (Quercus robor), downy birch (Betula pubescens) and silver birch (Betula pendula). Rowan (Sorbus aucuparia) and holly (Ilex aquifolium) occur occasionally.
The ground flora is dominated with Bramble (Rubus fruiticosus), creeping soft-grass (Holcus mollis), wavy hair-grass (Deschampsia flexuosa) and tufted hair-grass are also present. |
